High Quality, Fancy and Cheap Subnotebooks that Fit in any Pocket
The ASUS Eee PCs come with a special Linux operating system called Xandros. It was derived from a Debian distribution and contains many preinstalled applications that help you in your everyday working life. Examples are Wikipedia, a Messenger, Firefox, Skype, a dictionary, Open Office 2.0 and much more.
All these applications have been carefully chosen so you can start working with the Eee PC from the very first moment on. It thereby boots very quickly and is really a joy to work with.
With a little knowledge of Linux it is possible to tweak the desktop to your liking. In order to reach the command prompt or console, press Control-T and enter the command "sudo bash". This gives you root access to the system.
Should you now wish to upgrade the Eee PC's Xandros to a full KDE, just enter the following two commands. However be warned as this procedure cannot be reversed later on!
apt-get update
apt-get install ksmserver kicker
After restarting the machine you'll find a new menu entry called "Full Desktop" which allows you to use the KDE as you normally would without having the troubles of installing it on the Eee PC all by yourself.
